Exhibition opens February 17, 2019 @ 6PM, Performance in collaboration with Akshay Nandakumar
On display till February 19, 2019 11AM – 7PM
During his residency here at 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery, Johan Suneson has taken inspiration from children´s songs as a carrier of feelings of comfort and security. Suneson creates a clash between the ideals of the songs and other emotions that they awoke, for instance, fears of exclusion and disappearance. The songs are visualised in fabric applications with simple symbols from each song. The more complex and subjective feelings are shown in a series of ink drawings. The title New, New, Old School alludes to the nostalgia in the songs and visualizations, but also how the past has been used in a power play in the society today.
The exhibition also includes collaborative work with artist Avnit Kaur, where the two artists have exchanged memories of their grandmothers and great-grandmothers. Thanks to Jason Cheriyan for help with the fabric applications.
Johan Suneson is in Bangalore as a resident artist through iaspis, Sweden.
