About the performance:
The exploration of time and space play a fundamental role in Hetal’s work. In her upcoming performance at 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery, she seems to have imagined an inverted space that symbolises our fear of freedom. She describes this performance as an exhibition-making in real time, exploring the dangers and importance of silence and ultimately a difficult but an important question – what makes us free? and why most of us would rather choose not to be liberated? Drawing on Rousseau’s theory of ‘Social Contract’, Hetal builds an enclosure and negotiates with the idea of total freedom versus our most acceptable understanding of freedom.
About Hetal Chudasama:
Hetal is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice heavily concentrates on site-specific installation and performance. She finished her graduation from Faculty of Fine arts, M.S.U. Baroda in 2010. Her art practice is guided by the complex manifestation of human behaviour in the context of self and social anxieties. She describes her starting point as moving into space, a somewhat subterranean untouchable space. She begins from corners of her bedroom or the walls of her studios and moves into the ceilings of abandoned buildings in search of an invisible force which inspires her to touch the surfaces and contemplate time.
